Are your strengths sabotaging your feedback?

Hi Reader,

Last week, I spent a half-day coaching a Go-To-Market team currently in the "norming" stage of their team development.

One of the main themes that surfaced from our time together was this:

"We all want more feedback."

And yet, several team members openly expressed their struggle to give constructive feedback to peers and direct reports.

Often, the struggle could be a strength getting in the way.

  • Harmony - "I want to protect the relationship."
  • Developer - "I hesitate to point out gaps as I don't want to discourage someone.'
  • Responsibility - "I should have done a better job setting expectations from the start."
  • Analytical - "I need time to think about it..." (Two weeks later.) "Now, it's too late to give the feedback."

Sound familiar?

Do your strengths sometimes sabotage your good intentions to give feedback?

Use the power of a reframe.

How might that same strength be used to deliver the gift of growth to others?

  • Harmony - "I care so much about our relationship. I want to share feedback so we can stay aligned."
  • Developer - "I see so much potential in you, I want to give you some feedback to help you grow even faster.'
  • Responsibility - "I realized I could've set clearer expectations earlier, but I want to help us move forward now."
  • Analytical - "I've taken time to think and here's a specific observation that might help you...."

Remember, Feedback is a gift... A gift for growth. Let's be generous gift givers!

T3 Reader Insight - BE DIRECT

One of our Talents, Teams & Tacos readers, Stephanie, sent me a great insight about feedback:

"When it comes to feedback, you usually aren't being as direct as you think you are, and that is a disservice to the person you're giving feedback to."

>>> SHOUT OUT to Stephanie... THANK YOU!

This week, notice when one of your strengths might be holding you back from saying what someone truly needs to hear.
